Darryl 'DMC' McDaniels has accused the corporate giants of "advertising, selling, manufacturing, promoting and distributing multiple products" in the group's trademarked name without his consent.

The lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of New York by McDaniels, regarding products including glasses, hats, t-shirts, patches, wallets and other items of the DMC brand.

The lawsuit alleges the retailers have "improperly profited, diluted and harmed Run DMC".

The rapper says the brand has generated more than $100m (£80m) in revenue since its inception in 1981.

The group is considered a hip-hop pioneer, with hits including King of Rock, It's Tricky and the Aerosmith collaboration Walk This Way.

Run DMC was founded in New York by McDaniels, Joseph 'Run' Simmons and Jason 'Jam Master Jay' Mizell.

The group stopped recording after Master Jay was shot dead in his Queens recording studio in 2002.

The Run DMC logo became a symbol of hip-hop culture and its success outlived the group.

Amazon and Wal-Mart, which also owns similarly accused Jet, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sky Views: Boring Canada to be country of the year in 2017?

By Adam Boulton, Sky News Editor-at-Large

Canada has a big birthday in 2017. On 1 July Canadians will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Dominion of Canada by an act of the British Parliament.

Except for coverage of the visit by some Royals - the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and offspring were a smash hit in their pre-emptive tour in 2016 - the rest of the world usually wouldn't pay much attention.

Peaceful, prosperous, reasonable Canada has long suffered from the reputation of being one of the most boring countries in the world.

It was something even the Canadian-born comedian Mike Myers was forced to acknowledge.

"People say a lot of thing's about Canada, like that it's boring," he admitted.

But then he came loyally to the defence of his native heath, adding: "but if you look around the world, you can praise boring. It's a very civilised place to grow up. I'm very proud of it."

Now American-based celebrities say they plan to emigrate to Canada following the election of Donald Trump as US President. It remains to be seen if Bryan Cranston, Barbra Streisand, Lena Durham, Chloe Sevigny or Miley Cyrus will actually tear themselves away from Hollywood but it shows that Canada has become a go-to place for the liberal elite.

Nor should we forget that many of the top stars often known to the world as "American" are in fact from that part of North America above the United States' border. Justin Bieber, KD Laing, Michel Buble, the late Leonard Cohen, Celine Dion, Ryan Gosling, Drake, Seth Rogen, Michael J Fox, Jim Carrey, Shania Twain, Keanu Reeves and Donald and Kiefer Sutherland are all Canadians. Not bad for a country with one tenth of the US population.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau matters to the rest of the free world because he is the only remaining standard bearer for Western social democracy.Adam Boulton

The real reason for the new-found enthusiasm for things Canadian, however, lies with a new political star.

The 45-year-old Justin Trudeau has been Canada's Prime Minister for just over a year and inspires web posts such as "19 Reasons Why the World Has Fallen in Love with Justin Trudeau".

He is good-looking and not averse to appearing without a shirt on in sporting poses. He is happily married, a father and bi-lingual in English and French. He has degrees in literature and engineering and worked as a teacher.

He is the son of the last "interesting" Canadian PM Pierre Trudeau (in office between 1968 and 1984, during which time Justin's mother Margaret had a thing with the Rolling Stones).

He went to the airport to welcome Syrian refugees. He is a keen environmental campaigner. He tweeted a much criticised tribute to Fidel Castro. He is, in short, a liberal, both large and small 'l'. And, except for the tweeting, he is the polar opposite of the leader-of-the-free-world-elect Mr Trump.

Mr Trudeau matters to the rest of the free world because he is the only remaining standard bearer for Western social democracy.

Take the G7 of which Canada is a member. Italy and the UK lost their leaders in 2016. The US elected the conservative Trump. France's President Francois Hollande will retire hurt this May. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel is pre-occupied with a general election this Autumn. Stagnating Japan wonders what the westerners are up to.

Only Mr Trudeau, the leader of the world's 11th largest economy, seems to have a clear vision of where he wants to take the world and not just his own inward-looking nation.

Canada, he says in a New Year essay for The Economist, is "embracing the world".

"We know that if we want to extend the ladder of opportunity to everyone we must be an open society - one that welcomes new ideas, creative ways of thinking, and different cultures and people… being open to trade."

Mr Trudeau regretted Brexit but many of the UK's Brexiteers now see Canada as a model for Britain's relations with the rest of the world after leaving the EU.

After 14 months in office some of his shine is coming off. Even so, Prime Minister Mr Trudeau still enjoys positive opinion poll ratings at home and his Liberal Party has a double digit lead over the Conservatives.

In 2017 the global stage is set for Canada and Mr Trudeau to lead. Whatever happens, it won't be boring.
